Darling, you are a work of art - Jane Davenport’s MM Acrylic Stamps 4 Faces #376686

Hello everyone. Hope you had a fun weekend.  Today I'm inspired by Jane Davenport’s MM Acrylic Stamps 4 Faces #376686 and Mermaid Markers. They are back in stock.

I’m working in my 6x6 watercolour homemade art journal. It’s made from a Daler Rowney Hot Pressed 300gm paper pad.

To start I inked up one of the stamps with Ranger Victorian Velvet distress ink and stamped the image onto the page, then used a pencil to sketch over the stamped image.

I didn’t invent this technique, but I think it’s a pretty good technique if you want your face to look softer than when stamped with archival ink.

When I opened the mermaid markers I squeezed a little too hard, so my advice is two or three  soft squeezes just until you see the ink in the brush.

This ink is very pigmented so I laid a little Beach onto an acrylic block then picked some up with a water brush to colour her face and neck, avoiding the eyes.

I added colour until I was happy. I coloured in her irises using a dark blue pencil then drew in the pupil with a Black Posca pen.

I then emphasised  her eyes with a Unipin fiineline black pen and drew in fine lines for her eye brows.

I coloured her lips with the starfish marker, but I didn’t use the water brush. It’s a very small area so I used a very fine dry brush to pic up a bit of ink.

When the lips were dry I added a few vertical lines on her bottom lip using a fine White Posca pen then smudged with my finger.

I laid a little Byron Bay marker onto the acrylic block and added a tiny bit of water then added the shading around her eyes with a water brush.

Now for the hair:  I used my Distress Sprayer, but only pulling the trigger a little to drip water onto a small area at a time, then I dipped the Mermaid marker into the water until colour was disbursed.

It should really air dry but I’m impatient so dried the area with my heat gun and moved onto the next area. I repeated this until all the areas were coloured then added a few drips.

You can see in this pic that I have now accentuated her nostrils, lips, eye brows with a No. 1 Unipin fineline black pen.

I used a flower from the Stencil-Art Flower Girl Stencil and a White Hybrid gel pen to draw in the flowers, then went over the flowers with a White Posca pen.

I dyed a short piece of Ranger ribbon using just a little of the Mermaid markers and when dry I glued it on a small strip of card stock, creating some “ruffles” then glued it to the bottom of her neck.

Next I doodled in a few dots and coloured the centres of the flowers with a Unipin fiineline black pen. You can see that I also deepened the colour around her eyes a little.

To finish the page I added a small heart to her cheek and a sentiment from the Ranger Small Talk sticker set.

Bye til next time.

Duo of Tags

Hello and happy Monday.  Thanks for stopping by. Today I have two tags to share with you.

First I applied a thin coat of Ranger Distress Collage Medium to both tags and let them dry.

I just wanna make nice things

Then out came the Tim Holtz distress crayons. I haven’t used them in a while and its time they came out to play. The colours I chose were Salty Ocean, Mustard Seed and Spiced Marmalade scribbled randomly onto the tag. If the blue smudges into the yellow I get a sort of greeny colour and spiced marmalade and Mustard Seed gives me a lighter orangey colour. As soon as one colour was scribbled I quickly swiped my finger over a wet baby wipe and smudged the colour one section at a time. Then I used my Ranger water sprayer, only pulling the handle down a little to create some nice water marks and dried the tag with my heat gun.  I inked a script stamp very lightly with Sienna Archival Ink and lightly stamped the tag here and there and gave it a quick blast with the heat gun. This stamp was bought on a block many years ago but I removed it so that when I stamp I have more control.

I used the Sizzix Thinlits– Wildflowers #2 Dies to cut a stencil. I used the same flower twice and applied embossing paste with the palette knife through the homemade stencil. I’m impatient so gave it a blast with the heat gun as well.

The butterfly was created in the same way as the background, then stamped with a butterfly stamp from the Finnibair Cling Mounted Stamp set - Don't Forget to Fly that I bought a couple of years ago.

I edged the tag with a Black Archival Ink pad and chose a sentiment from the Tim Holtz Small Talk pad.

Last but not least I scribbled the Spiced Marmalade distress crayon onto the craft mat, spritzed a small length of Ranger ribbon with water, spritzed the distress crayon on the craft mat and saturated the ribbon with colour.

Next I crunched it up in my hand and left it to dry, then threaded it though the hole in the top of the tag.

This is the finished tag.

Be the Brightest star in the universe

The background for this tag was created a little differently. I applied Broken China and Peeled Paint Distress Oxide Inks onto my craft mat, together with Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink. Sprayed lightly with water then smooshed my tag into it and left it to dry. When dry I scribbled over the entire tag with Salty Ocean, Chipped Sapphire and Faded Jeans Distress crayons, being careful to blend each colour with my finger [swiped over a wet wipe] before applying the next. I sprayed the tag with water then smooshed my tag on the craft mat. I love how in some places the first layer is showing through.

While waiting for the tag to dry I chose a face from the Dina Wakely Stamp set Scribbly Women and stamped it onto a scrap of cardstock using Black Archival Ink.

I stamped the neckline and a little extra onto a scrap of Gelli print to make the dress.  I coloured the image by applying a little distress crayon to my craft mat and mixing with the tiniest bit of water. I used a mixture of Antique Linen and Tattered Rose for her face and neck and Mustard Seed for her hair, with a touch of Victorian Velvet for her cheeks. When dry I glued the Gelli print dress onto the neckline.

I applied embossing paste with the palette knife through the Stencil-Art Starry Night stencil.

However, the white stars weren’t doing it for me, so when they were dry I painted them with Dina Wakely’s heavy bodied acrylic paint – Stirling and splattered a little white paint onto the tag then added a little Silver Stickles to one star.

What a difference!  .  Next I glued the image onto the right hand side of the tag and added my sentiment. I dyed some ribbon and added it to the tag.

Arty Fun

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had an awesome weekend. I did.

This journal page is about having some Arty Fun and using hand lettering in my journals even though I have not yet perfected this skill.  Its all about accepting and loving your art for what it is.

I made this mini art journal from a sheet of 200 gsm mixed media paper. The first thing I did was prep my Daler-Rowney Aquafine watercolour paint by spraying the palette quite liberally with water then I applied it to the page in smallish patches, trying not to let the colours run too much.  I let the colours dry in between to try to prevent the colours running into each other. The application mustn't be too light otherwise the "ghosting" wont show.

Now I have to admit that I was so involved in the process that I didn’t take pics of this stage but I recreated some of the processes for you, so some of the pics won’t always match the finished page.

When the page was dry I drew a double squiggly border around the page and blocked it in using a White and Black Posca pen, then I moved on to the next step,  stencils and wet wipes.

For the most part I used a circle stencil but you will see on the finished page I also used a wiggly stencil and a wet wipe to remove some of the colour. This is Dyan Reaveley's technique which she calls "ghosting".  The trick with this technique is to use good watercolour paper and a not too saturated wet wipe. If your wet wipe is too saturated the water seeps underneath the stencil. I like this technique as It adds another layer of subtle interest to a page without overpowering the page and you can add more layers on top.

I brought out my Kate Crane Texture cube 1 stamp by Stampotique and stamped a couple of times with White acrylic paint using different sides of the cube.  This is one of my favourite stamps for art journal/mixed media pages and I use it all the time.

I also outlined some of the stencilled circles with a White Posca pen.

I added colour here and there with a small circle stencil I made long ago from the Tim Holtz Mixed Media Die set. I use it often on my journal pages.

I stamped three images from the Dyan Reaveley's Dylusions Cling Stamp Set – Mini Me and Dyan Reaveley's Dylusions Black Sheep Cling Stamp Set. I also cut some some legs from another stamp set.
I fussy cut them then coloured them in by rubbing distress crayons onto my craft mat and then picking up a bit of colour with my water brush. The background is quite busy and the colours are quite muted so they don’t fight with the background.

I used a little Dylusions Washi tape in both the top right corner and the bottom left corner to create another layer and glued the Dylusions ladies onto the Washi tape on the left hand side of the page, tucking the legs in before gluing down the bottom of their dresses.

I'm new to hand lettering and really don’t have that much time to practice, but I would like to improve these skills and use creative lettering on some of my pages so gave it a try.

My art journaling is about my arty friends whom I art with.  We laugh, we learn from each other, we make a mess but most of all we have fun!!!!!

See you next time!

So ……… Whats in the Box???????

Today we’re talking about the much awaited Jane Davenport products that finally arrived in the shop a few days ago. This isn't a review as such, there's plenty of those on the internet, its more about what you get in the box and links to some truly inspiring videos you can watch.

Jane’s “Paint ‘til you Faint” Water Colour paints

I’m no expert but I have to say that I do love the colours of the Neutrals as well as the Brights. You get 12 amazing colours in each box. When you open the box each individual pan is wrapped with a drawn and coloured face on the wrapping. They look good enough to eat, let alone paint with.  Both sets contain three primaries so you can mix any colour you like [that’s a plus for anyone who wants to mix their own colours]. Both palettes also have a little inspirational insert to help you on your way. Jane has just released single watercolor pans so when you use up your favourite colour, no worries, you can replace it. She also includes information on the colours (like pigments and Light fastness) on her website. For some inspiration visit this video on youtube.

Jane’s Acrylic Paints
Surprise, surprise both paint sets come with not only 4 matte acrylic paints, but a paint brush and a stencil. The back of each set also has a mini tutorial.
